30 Mini Libraries to Be Constructed in Coimbatore Under the Street Library Scheme

The municipal police on Thursday inaugurated the "Street Library" initiative, in support of efforts to keep Coimbatore free from crimes, drug misuse, and juvenile delinquency. Mini libraries will be placed in heavily inhabited locations. The initiative was introduced by Nandini Rangaswamy, chairman and founding trustee of GRG Institutions, and City Police Commissioner V. Balakrishnan.

The GRG Trust will help the police in Coimbatore city put up 50 tiny libraries. The Trust gave the police 30 shelves on Thursday, each holding 200 volumes.

According to Mr. Balakrishnan, the Street Library project's primary purpose is to foster reading habits in kids that will aid in character development, information acquisition, and advice for achieving higher life objectives.

The police and supporting organizations will make sure that kids from lower-income households have easy access to high-quality books through this program. The libraries will enable people to make the most of their free time, he claimed.

The libraries, according to Ms. Rangaswamy, will benefit kids in weaning themselves off of technology like cell phones. "The most significant learning facilities in the educational system are libraries. According to her, they pass on knowledge, and reading is the most effective way for kids to learn the language.

The Ammankulam mini-library was one of many that the municipal police created as an experiment in August. Using the results, the Street Library initiative was started.

Each micro library will offer kid-friendly literature with comics, tales, basic information, and inspirational speakers. The police station's station house officer is in charge of overseeing the operation of the libraries that fall within his or her purview.

The daily management of the libraries will be assigned to a volunteer from the neighborhood. Children from the area will receive membership cards to utilize the books.

The police intend to expand the Street Library project to other locations across the city and anticipate help from organizations and businesses as part of their corporate social responsibility.
